Biological science is a comprehensive scientific study of living organisms such as animals, humans, plants, and microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. Under the leadership of our Honourable Vice-Chancellor, the Department of Life Sciences and Biotechnology is committed to providing quality training in different courses related to areas of Biological Sciences (Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Agricultural Sciences, Food Technology, Environmental Sciences, Forensic Science, Human Molecular Genetics, Plant Sciences and Animal Sciences).
Under the academic and research development programme, the Department of Life Sciences (presently named as Department of Life Sciences and Biotechnology) was established in the main residential campus of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (formerly Kanpur University), Kanpur in year 1983 to impart and promote multi- and interdisciplinary higher education in Life Sciences by utilizing the modern concepts of teaching and research at masters and doctoral level. The Department of Life Sciences and Biotechnology at the School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology is actively engaged in higher education, innovative teaching, cutting-edge research, and training in the Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Food Technology, and other various interdisciplinary areas of Biological Sciences. The department offers Undergraduate, Post Graduate, and Doctoral Degree programs in a wide spectrum of areas in Biological Sciences. The department aims to create an excellent environment for smooth quality teaching and research activities to produce future scientists, academicians, leaders, and quality professionals in modern biological sciences and allied areas. Faculty members of the department are from various expertise with interdisciplinary global exposures and are pursuing modern teaching and research activities in a range of contemporary and frontier areas of biological sciences. Our research covers all layers of life, from molecules and cells to individuals and entire biological communities. Broad fields of research in the department include Molecular Genetics, Cancer Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Microbiology, Protein Engineering, Molecular Enzymology, Neurobiology, Microbial Technology, Plant and Animal Sciences, Infection Biology, and Immunology. The department also intends to use artificial intelligence and machine learning in biological sciences to stimulate biomedical research which has a fair scope of developing therapeutic modules for different dreadful diseases and ailments. We aim for collaborative and interdisciplinary research that integrates basic and applied sciences to answer challenging fundamental biological questions having an international impact on science and mankind. About the Programme: B.Sc. (Biochemistry, Botany, and Zoology OR BBZ) degree course is a three-year (six semesters) undergraduate program. The main objective of the B.Sc. (BBZ) degree course is to provide deep knowledge of basic and advanced biological science along with professional training in biological, molecular, and clinical techniques to develop skilled personnel for different laboratories. Under this program, students will study three subjects from an advanced Biology stream (Biochemistry, Zoology, and Botany), elective courses related to other faculty, and co-curricular courses. The proposed program structure offers varied flexibility to the students in terms of course choice and exit routes. If any student decides to leave after one year, s/he will be awarded a Certificate in Clinical Biochemistry. In case any student chooses to leave after two years, s/he will be awarded a Diploma in Molecular Diagnostics. After completing a three-year course, s/he will be awarded a Bachelor in B.Sc. (BBZ).

About the Programme: B.Sc. - M.Sc. Integrated Microbiology is a five years course (ten semesters). The program offers the graduates knowledge in microbiology and an overview of the processes that employ or deal with microbes that enables them to handle the safe and efficient use of microbiological applications. Acquired knowledge and understanding of the microbiology concepts as applicable to diverse areas such as medical, industrial, environment, genetics, agriculture, food, and others. The course aims to prepare graduates by imparting skills to use technological developments related to current and advanced microbiological areas involving molecular diagnostics, immunotechnology, mass cultivation of microbes, downstream processing, and nanotechnology with scope for upskilling in all potential future technologies to contribute effectively to Research and Development leading to patenting and publishing. The proposed program structure offers varied flexibility to the students in terms of exit routes.
