Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering is a core branch of engineering that deals with the study of Materials, its processing, and transformation. This plays an important role in current and emerging technologies. Advances in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering influence each field of life from transportation to electronic industry, telecommunication industry, aeronautics and space industry, biomedical industry, energy and many more. This Department was established in 2004 as Materials Science and Engineering and reframed in 2008 as Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering. The department offers 4 years B.Tech. course in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering and a 3 Year Diploma course in Metallurgy. Our alumni students are well placed in various companies and organizations, and some have also joined as assistant professor in IITs / NITs.
The Department was established in 2004 as Materials Science and Engineering and renamed in 2008 as Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering. Department offers 4 years B.Tech. course to 60 students per year. This is the second Institute in this region offering an under graduate course in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering other than IIT Kanpur.
Now days with the emerging trends in technology, the demand for new, smart and traditional materials is increasing worldwide. These are engineers who manufacture and tailor the properties of the material for these purposes. They design, process materials and construct components / structures using materials. Also they select materials and analyze failure of materials. They are as well working to manufacture the huge quantity of materials specially metals on the shop floor of the production plant. Responsible engineers are also interested in improving the performance of the product being manufactured or designed. Our understanding of the relationship between structure and properties provides the basis for both, selection of existing materials and development of new materials, and production thereafter. Controlling microstructure has led to development many new metals, alloys and ceramics, while manipulation of molecular structure, has produced a vast spectrum of polymers.
This really shows the broad spectrum of the areas covered by Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering. At one side it spans to the production of materials in mega quantities, in the manufacturing plants of steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, etc., where-as on the other hand it covers the research and production areas of the development of electronic, magnetic, ceramic, optical, nano-materials, smart materials, etc.
We would also like to comment that this Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering discipline gives opportunity to the students who are passed out from this field to serve for the industries, production units, manufacturing plants, research institutions, academic institutions, space research centers, nuclear power plants and government running CSIR Labs, etc. Our well educated students passed out from this institute are working in many of such areas. We are committed to provide high value education to our students studying in our department. We are one way ahead in providing the guidance, support and platform for getting better jobs to our final year students.
