University, Kanpur as per national biosafety regulations and guidelines issued by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, for oversight of research involving hazardous microorganisms, recombinant DNA technology, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), living modified organisms (LMOs), and related biological materials. IBSC acts as the institutional nodal body for biosafety governance and regulatory compliance.

Vision

To promote safe, ethical, and responsible bioscience research through robust biosafety practices and regulatory compliance.

Objectives

  • Ensure biosafety and biosecurity compliance within the university
  • Review and monitor research involving biohazardous materials
  • Facilitate safe conduct of biotechnology and microbiological research
  • Ensure good practices for waste disposal
  • Promote awareness and training related to biosafety practices
  • Support responsible innovation in life sciences research.

Scope of Research Covered

The IBSC reviews projects involving:

  • Recombinant DNA technology
  • Genetic engineering research
  • Gene cloning and expression studies
  • Microbial biotechnology research
  • Pathogenic microorganisms
  • GM plants/animals research
  • Conduct periodic inspection of research laboratories and facilities
  • Conduct risk assessment and recommend appropriate biosafety containment levels
  • Monitor biosafety practices and laboratory compliance
  • Develop institutional biosafety guidelines and emergency response procedures
