About the Department

Established in 2005, the Department of Music at Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur has been a nurturing ground for talented artists, educators and performers.

For over two decades, we have successfully run undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Hindustani Classical Music (Vocal, Tabla) and Dance (Kathak).

Our alumni are well-placed as AIR & Doordarshan artists, college professors, independent performers and cultural event organizers.

Vision and Mission

The department strives to:

  • Develop skilled performers, educators, and researchers in music, dance, and theatre through integrated academic and practical training.
  • Preserve and promote Indian classical, folk, and contemporary performing arts while encouraging innovation and creative exploration.
  • Provide holistic, performance-based learning across B.P.A, M.P.A, M.A, and certificate programmes, blending theory with practice.
  • Foster artistic excellence, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration among students across performing arts disciplines.
  • Encourage ethical artistic practice, cultural sensitivity, and community engagement through inclusive and lifelong learning initiatives.

Our alumni are proudly serving as artists on All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan, bringing the rich traditions of Hindustani classical music to national audiences. Many have established themselves as faculty members and professors in reputed colleges and universities, continuing the legacy of music education. Several alumni have carved independent careers as performers, concert artists and recording musicians, while others have taken leadership roles as cultural event organizers, festival curators and arts administrators.
