Department Of Chemical Engineering

About Chemical Engineering:

Chemical Engineering involves the design, development and operation of complex processes, which safely and efficiently produce products with minimum of environmental impact. Chemical Engineers have traditionally played a key role in industries such as petroleum processing, fertilizers, energy, food, agriculture, polymers, synthetic fibers, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, gases, consumer products and specialty chemicals. With the recent developments in the world, chemical engineers can also find opportunities in the field of pollution prevention technologies, new drugs, development and the manufacture of artificial organs and limbs etc.

Chemical engineering is highly interdisciplinary and evolving with advances in other branches of engineering, sciences and humanities. Its takes the inputs and applies the knowledge in biomedical sciences, nanotechnology, drug delivery, micro electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS) and devices, artificial intelligence for a sustainable development of the world.

About Department:

Keeping in view the need to provide competent and well-trained professionals for the country’s chemical industries, the Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 1996 in UIET, CSJM University. In early years of beginning two IIT Kanpur professors taught in the department and helped shape the department. The Department has four well-equipped laboratories in order to enable the students to understand the practical aspects of the theoretical knowledge imparted to them in the classrooms.

The four laboratories are:
(1) Transport Processes Laboratory
(2) Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory
(3) Instrumentation and Process Control Laboratory and
(4) Process Simulation Laboratory.

All the classroom are equipped with LCD projector for effective teaching and presentation.

  1. The Transport Processes (Unit Operations) Laboratory primarily consists of experiments in fluid mechanics, heat transfer and mass transfer. The laboratory has setups to perform experiments on fluid flow through pipes, valves, conduits, notches, orifice meter, venturimeter, measurement of viscosity by falling ball method, verification of Bernoulli’s theorem, performance of centrifugal pump, sedimentation, sieve-analysis of particle size etc. For study of heat and mass transfer, the laboratory is equipped with setups like double pipe heat exchanger, shell and tube heat exchanger, measurement of thermal conductivity apparatus, electrical analogue of two-dimensional heat transfer apparatus, liquid diffusivity measurement apparatus, natural convection set-up, heat transfer through agitated vessel apparatus, fractional distillation column, single effect evaporator, steam distillation setup, forced convection drier and soxhlet extractor etc.
  2. The Reaction Engineering Laboratory consists of various reactors like the batch reactor, plug flow reactor, continuously stirred tank reactor, semi-batch reactor and setups to study the residence time distribution in a continuously stirred tank reactor and in a plug flow reactor.
  3. The Instrumentation and Process Control Laboratory has several systems to study the closed loop feedback control of temperature, pressure, level and flow., using different type of controller modes like proportional, proportional-integral (PI) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID). To give an idea of automatic control used in today’s industry, each of the above setups are fully computer controlled. Experiments as well as simulations can be performed to study the responses interacting and non-interacting systems. A Pneumatic Control Valve Trainer apparatus is used to study the control action of pneumatic valve.
  4. The Process Simulation Laboratory is equipped with 25 computer terminals having licensed CHEMCAD-7 software provided by Chemstations Inc. The students perform simulation studies by drawing virtual process flow diagrams. The simulation studies help strengthen theoretical understandings of Chemical Engineering curricula in a very fast and convenient way. Students take help of this facility during their plant design projects also.

About Faculty: The department houses eight well qualified and experienced faculty members.  Most of them possess a PhD degree from reputed institutes such as IITs and NITs. Faculty teaches with modern tools of teaching and encourages reasoning and original thinking among students. The lecture recordings are being uploaded on a departmental YouTube channel for maximum benefit to the students. Conduction of guest lectures, seminar, workshop, industrial tours are regular feature of the department. Department provides rigorous learning in fundamental understanding through practical training of the subjects. Continuous evaluation and open book exams are common. The faculty are known to be very accessible and supportive to the students.

About Course:  Department runs 4 year B. Tech. course in Chemical Engineering with an intake of 66 students through an entrance examination as decided by the University/State Government. The course content were last revised on January 2020 to follow a relevant syllabus with diverse and emerging theoretical knowledge and sufficient practical background. The department is planning to begin a M. Tech. course in near future.
